Inchies

1 inch x 1 inch

Asia Series

Okay, I may not be the most trendy fashion person when it comes to clothes, for I tend to stick to the classic looks that give me more than one fleeting season of satisfaction. But when it comes to art, I can jump in with the rest of the crowd and try the "latest" thing. For years I've traded art with friends from all over the world, usually concentrating on 2.5 x 3.5 inch trading card-sized works. Once in a while I'd do a postcard, but most of my collection features the standard baseball card size.

I recently learned about some collage artists who were working in the 1 inch x 1 inch format. Yes, that's incredibly small! Since I mostly trade hand-painted cards, I decided to try the new "inchie" size. It was a fun challenge to paint in a reduced, simplistic form. Here are three of my first attempts using heavy watercolor paper, a V-5 Precise pen, and watercolors.

I'm searching now for just the right display sheet so that when I start trading, I will have a practical way to show off my new art trades.

Small works

Bamboo Treat

At the Derby

I've been working on several art trading cards this past week, mostly because they are easier to do while lounging in bed watching television, and they are more fun than reading my textbooks. I'm also participating in some trading again, which is always a treat. I have so many great pieces of art from all over the world. It is inspiring to go through the collection and enjoy the different styles, themes, colors, and textures.

These small works measure 2.5 x 3.5 inches. I am currently working on a Zetti exchange for an illustration atc trading group, so there will be more cards posted in the next few days.

New abstracts

Between Jupiter and Mars

Collision

I experimented by painting with a cut up piece of mat board, creating various shapes with black acrylic paint and then adding other acrylic colors after the black dried. These are mini abstracts, measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches on canvas paper.

Miniature Abstracts

Hatched

Rising

No Words

Acrylics on canvas paper. Miniature paintings... 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Honestly, I was putting off my educational diversity reading, but now I've had my studio fun, so it's time to crack open the textbook!

Morning Light

...shining on my bookshelves early in the morning. Collecting drawing books and other art books has grown into a hobby that required me to set up a computerized database to keep track of all the titles I have collected to avoid buying duplicates. What can I say? They inspire me! This is my "drawing" section. I have separate areas for watercolor, oil, colored pencil, jewelry design, pastel and magazine holders full of Artist Magazine and American Artist issues. On the adjoining set of bookshelves I keep all my writing books, photography, and doll making reference materials.

I've always wanted to live in the middle of a library. :)

The internet is wonderful, but there is something soothing about holding a beautiful book in my hands while I'm cuddled under my Nana's afghan.
