Pastel Play

"Ride With Golden Bird"

"Touch of Spring"

These art cards started with an acrylic abstract background. I then added line drawings with black pastel which led to more pastel color as the images took form. Finished designs were sprayed with Krylon Workable Fixative.

Happy Birthday Dad

Dad and his brothers in New York City. Dad on the right.

I can't imagine having three boys... looks like trouble if you ask me! Ha ha!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!

(Dad holding the plein air wet canvas carrier he made me without directions or a template!)

Thank you for being the first great man in my life. :)

Abstract Process

My husband was recently convinced to paint his office (finally!!!). So we got the paint finished before he left on his sales meeting. We ended up with one large wall where his ugly map had been, so he suggested that I paint something for him... an original piece of art for the new manly type "den/office". He already has 2 of my golf course paintings hanging in there, so he wanted something more abstract for the big space.

I decided to paint a wine themed painting for him in acrylics. I started by scribbling a random pattern on the stretched canvas with charcoal, then put in some bottles and wine glasses. It really evolved over time as I added paint. Since it was from my imagination and there was no sketchwork beforehand, it was fun to let it develop with each color. This took 2.5 hours to complete.

He comes home this evening, so I'm excited to have him see my surprise. Caitlin and I went to Pier 1 Imports and bought a nice rattan chair with fun pillows and we added a bookcase to hold all his sales awards. What was once labled "the cave"--- has turned into a lovely office.

Art Additions

I couldn't resist this leather journal I saw at Barnes and Noble the other day. It has four thick signatures with fairly decent paper. I haven't written or sketched in it yet, so I don't know how well it takes various mediums, but the leather smell is divine--the price at $12.95 was a good deal too, so I'm happy to add it to my collection.

I also ordered some empty half pans from Jerry's Artarama (they cost .35 each), and I made a small travel kit out of an empty Altoids tin. I picked up some peel and stick magnetic strip material at the craft store and attached a magnet to each little pan. I labeled each pan with the color and manufacturer so I can refill as needed. Depending on which colors I want to carry, I just pop in the appropriate pans, and I'm ready to throw the paint tin in my pocketbook for some art on the go. :)

Self Portrait Tuesday: Time Passes

Self Portrait Tuesday. Time Passes...

This is a photo montage about my obsession with time and how it passes much too quickly. The background image is of my childhood home in Bear Mountain State Park, New York--- a stone cabin set on the Appalachian Trail.

Photos layered in Photoshop and altered with various filters.

The Promise

THE PROMISE

... a mother's Valentine message for her daughter

The challenge this morning was to come up with some art for Valentine's Day. I decided to work in my small Moleskine using a double page spread. The greatest thing about Moleskine pages, is that I can combine lots of different media and the paper holds up rather well. This sketch was done with a Pilot Precise V-5. I then used acrylic for the red background, adding watercolor washes and a touch of purple pastel, then finally spraying with Krylon Workable Fixative to keep it from smearing.

Hormonal Nightmare

Hormonal Nightmare

Ever Have One of those Days??? LOL I'm in a goofey mood this afternoon, and I had fun with this art card. I started with a line sketch from my imagination on slightly moist paper so that the ink would run all wonky, and this is what happened. Watercolors and ink on cold press watercolor paper.

Self Portrait Tuesday, February challenge: All of Me

I tend to worry about things I have no control over. I've gotten better, but I still need to work on this part of my personality.

Manet in the Moleskine... again.

Manet's Plum Study c. 1880

My humble version of Manet's plum study was done with my Winsor Newton travel watercolors while I sat in my big, soft chair watching television. I lightly sketched in the shapes of the plums with pencil, then used transparent washes to build up the colors. Painted in my small Moleskine from a photo reference of Manet's original work.

Floral Art Card

Mini acrylic painting. 2.5 x 3.5 on cold press watercolor paper.

It was dreary and rainy today in Florida, so I worked on some iris studies, one in my Moleskine, and then I made this small art card for my trading stash.

Ankle and Art Cards

She Dances With Veils of Color

Well, good news about the ankle... it's only a bad sprain, no broken bones. I'm supposed to allow another 2 weeks for more healing time before I go and do anything else stupid. :) Since I don't have any wild and crazy plans for hiking through the Alps with my plein air equipment, I guess I can live with some down time on the sofa instead. ha!

Here is another abstract card that I did yesterday. 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Acrylics and pastel on Vellum Bristol.
